:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Irish wise -- Fascinating take on 1960s politics, the mob and Hollywood. : Everything you thought was probable in the 1960s becomes reality in this compelling, brilliantly written novel. It's one of those books you want to read in one sitting. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan Dormady Eisenberg -- Clever, Suspenseful Mid-century Mystery : I read Jake Tapper’s new mystery in one day: I couldn’t put it down. Much will be said about the author’s clever depiction of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, but the true “stars” of this excellent mystery are his fictional protagonists, Charlie and Margaret Marder. The plot takes us back to the early years of the Kennedy Administration and explores many topics germane to that era. The players and locations are impeccably researched and the resolution of the twin mysteries at the core are satisfying. Bravo to Mr. Tapper for a superbly crafted mid-century suspense novel! Now I plan to read his first book about the Marders, a delightful pair of accidental sleuths. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kenneth C. Mahieu -- Fool me twice, shame on ....... : I like Jake Tapper. On CNN. Most of the time. But as far as "The Devil May Dance" goes, there's not a better example of "Don't Quit Your Day Job". ( Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Lab Lady -- Newest installment falls a bit flat : This book was not bad and if I could I would give it a 3.5. I think setting the book in Hollywood did not allow Tapper to play to his strengths: he knows DC much better than he knows Hollywood. This one seemed even more over the top than the last. Tapper doesn’t quite know what to do with minor characters. Charlie’s former intern makes an appearance here. Not only does Margaret (who didn’t seem to like her all that much in the previous book) enlist her (as she has conveniently relocated to LA) in some unbelievable adventures— the intern is now a young mother but nevertheless seems willing to go out with Margaret after midnight to secure some evidence— but once she is ‘saved’ at the end, neither Margaret or Charlie talks to her. She just disappears. The big reveal seems anti-climatic and is so convoluted it hardly seems worth the trouble. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Deb -- Disappointed with order not book - book was great!!! Highly recommend!! : I have been able to return and reorder a signed copy. I have read the book and it is great. I hope there are more Charlie and Margaret books to come. I really enjoyed both books. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Salima -- So good! : Usually not a big reader but I couldn't put this book down. Truly enjoyed every second I spent reading it, all the research done on the 1960s, Hollywood, Sinatra... really makes you feel like you're there, a part of the story -- also taught me way too many things that I did not know about that time. The plot is really interesting and keeps you hooked up until the very end. I wish I spent more time reading it, might have to reread it to enjoy it even more. Really recommend it :) ( Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michele Fitzgerald -- Best read in a very long time : Wow!! Great story. Awesome read. Best book read in a long time. Thanks Jake! ( Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mary M. -- Great combination of real history and "story." : I have been in the hospital all day sitting with my husband and that can get tedious. But I had this wonderful book and I only have about a quarter of it left and only bc I am "saving it" as best I can for tomorrow's visit. I am just sick that I am coming to the end and I can only hope Jake Tapper is writing one, or maybe dozens at once, as we speak! I adore this read and was, of course, agewise, in the thick of it then. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from augustinius -- A complete waste of paper. : The Sources and Acknowledgements were far more entertaining than the novel itself. ( Reviewed in Canada on June 9, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from 1stein2 -- A Woke's Dilemma? : JakeTapper is a renown and respected journalist for CNN. He is also an accomplished author. In his new novel The Devil May Dance he shines a light on the magic Kennedy presidency years and its mix up with Hollywood, Las Vegas and, of course, the Rat pack around Frank Sinatra. The detective story is unfolding as seen through the eyes of Congressman Charlie Marder and his wife Margaret. When I read the enthusiastic review in the NYT, I ordered it right away. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Very enjoyable : Having been born in the 50s, this was definitely my kind of book in terms of pop culture references. All the names were so familiar to me and it was great fun to see them as living, breathing, contributing people on the planet once again. The early part of the book was interesting and entertaining but not particularly compelling. However, once I got about half way through, things started happening at quite a pace and in no time I was hooked and could hardly put it down. Great entertainment! ( Reviewed in Canada on November 4, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Don Morgan -- Not nearly as good as Hellfire Club : Obvious a lot of research went into this. Interesting background on Hollywood connections to Kennedy administration. Spent way too long trying to look at the 60s through the lens of the “woke” generation. Tapper is a bright guy. If he had set aside his personal politics he might have been able to have done a good job. I had read Hellfire Club which was quite good. Sadly this one didn’t make it. ( Reviewed in Canada on July 4, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Big Daddy -- Not a great read : Was not an engaging story. Lots of known political figures and names but storyline got lost and did not engage this reader. ( Reviewed in Canada on August 12, 2021 )
