A big creepy old haunted house that really becomes not just the setting but almost a character in a good story that links lives in the same town spanning 25 years. I loved all the characters and the unfolding style of narrative along with the author’s same theme of a detective with a personal connection to the very evil that she’s investigating. A select group is ‘invited’ to play by sneaking into a creepy, derelict house before midnight and follow a set of instructions to invite in the Midnight Man on the stroke of midnight. Each player then lights candle so they can explore the house, but if the candle goes out it means the Midnight Man is near and one of you could die. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Angela Marsons -- Engrossing! : I have read and loved every book by this author and The Midnight Man was no exception. From the very first page (in what was one of the best opening chapters I've ever read) I was in the story. From that point on I wanted to know everything that had transpired at Blackhall Manor and the events that had lead up to the tragic slaying of an entire family. The story was taut and compelling and kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting to read more every time I picked it up. If I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it and that is a testament to this author's skills in creating characters that I now truly care about. The minute I finished it I found myself wanting to read more about this community. I sincerely hope the author is penning the next in the series as I will be first in line to read it. The suspense had been building for weeks pre-release, with the publishers: Embla, doing a fantastic job of releasing eerie teasers. The story certainly did not disappoint. I simultaneously read via kindle and listened along via audiobook to The Midnight Man. The audiobook definitely added to the overall theatrics. It made for a a superbly spooky listen. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from marj Venmore -- Absolutely brilliant : Absolutely magnificent I must say. I am not a great lover of horror type books anymore I did my horror phase years ago. However I certainly am a massive fan of Caroline Mitchell books. So it was not so much of a thought that made me purchase the book. It's both like the horror type book I thought it might be it's more how people can sense things like a sixth sense type of thing . Although I was so absorbed in the book not even a child Elliot having a sixth sense was conceding . They say it starts in childhood if you believe in having a sixth sense which I do. Sarah coming back after the suspicions of her husband to the police force although she as on restrictive duties was brave as she knew how a morning people who feel about her. Yet none knowing her true identity of her being Sarah Milton who family owned Black manor hall and all died there Sarah being the sole survivor . It almost had counselling sorry for her when Yvonne played sarcastic comments and Thatcher in Sarah wasn't nice Sarah did eventually believe Richie to be a friend although she was suspicious to start. When the girls played the Midnighman game with one having lost her life it was only a matter of time before Sarah realised she had to return to the being which she dreaded returning back to Blackthorn manor garbage knew it was something she had to do. The build up and back story were fantastic as I have come to expect from Caroline Mitchell in all her books, and although a totally different genre for her it's still worth of a 5 Star review and I have book two on pre-order brilliant story. I still do prefer her other stuff but believe it's good for any other to try something different. Yes 👍 definitely recommend this book a very very worthy.
